first day

Goodday to you, me lovelies!
As some of you may or may not know, I arrived yesterday for a 3 month stay in Sweden. Weird country. Or rather: weird me. Yes, this country makes me weird.
As my personal history up till now has not been one filled with excitement and adventures of the wacky kind, I expected myself to feel intensely sad and crippled by homesickness under the experience of being in a foreign country for any extended period of time.
Strangely enough I didn´t feel much of anything leaving yesterday. Perhaps the overkill of new impressions sort of knocked out my senses completely, which would be understandable as my trip was about 13hours long. But somewhere between Stockholm and Nynäshamn the shock set in. As the bus took me, ironically enough, closer to home (i.e. south), a feeling of angst mixed with the previous excitement. Staring out of the window all sorts of thoughts began raging through my brain. What the hell am I going to do in a country where I can understand absolutely no word of what is said whatsoever, and where it´s pitch black at 16.30PM? I felt completely isolated as the snow-covered landscape passed me by, interrupted only by tall black pine trees and the occasional house illuminated by what seemed to be leftovers from Christmas lighting. Of course, the fact that the Lost in Translation soundtrack was playing on my headphones didn´t help.
In fact, the fact that I had watched the Lost in Translation movie the night before I left for Sweden probably wasn´t a smart plan either, for that matter. But I have to say being in a similar environment really increased my love for this little piece of cellulloid, because it captures perfectly that strange dreamlike state of alienation you feel when you cannot for the life of you understand anyone in your surroundings. It really feels surreal.

Luckily the Swedish are never too bothered to switch to English, albeit a strange back-of-the-throat kind...

more updates to follow peeps. that´s all I have time for for now. Tomorrow I´ll give you an overview of my first evening in Sweden, which strangely enough coincides with the weirdest television night of my life. As I said, these people are weird.

hey there weirda, how wonderful that you've arrived savely after such a treacherous journey! no birds falling out of the sky, no delay in flights or heavy turbulence, no boats crashing on a growler? 13 hours of traveling and you're still with us, what a delight! I'm looking forward to reading all about your experiences and seeing pictures of that estranged country.
Hey ho hey ho, go eva!
